Local businesses are encouraged to secure their spot at the upcoming Small Business Week Breakfast at the Maroochy RSL Club to celebrate, network and connect with other like-minded businesses as part of Queensland Small Business Week.

Hosted by the Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance, the breakfast will be held on Wednesday May 30 from 6.30am and include the launch of the 2018 Sunshine Coast Business Awards - a program council has supported as a partner since the awards’ inception 24 years ago.

Queensland Small Business Week runs from May 28 to June 1 and celebrates the important contribution that 426,000 small businesses make to the Queensland economy, including the 30,000 Sunshine Coast businesses that also contribute to our regional economy.

Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer, who will be attending the breakfast event, encouraged the local business community to come together and celebrate the growing success of our region.

“The Sunshine Coast’s game-changer projects, our high levels of business confidence and our unemployment rates, which are below the national average, are an outstanding mix that has enabled many businesses to invest, grow and prosper here,” Cr Dwyer said.

“Council is committed to supporting local business activity and innovation and provides a range of programs, initiatives and workshops throughout the year.

“Our procurement policy has also been enhanced to emphasise our ‘buy local’ preference for all of our key goods and services, including key strategies whereby in many instances only local businesses will be invited to quote.”

Over breakfast, guests will hear inspiring stories from winners of the 2017 Sunshine Coast Business Awards including Will Smart (Smartline Machinery), Kendell Moreton (Home Care Assistance), Will Shrapnel (HeliMods) and Matt Hepburn (Your Mates Brewing Co.) along with key projects and programs the Chamber Alliance will be progressing in the year ahead.

The Sunshine Coast Business Awards recognise the efforts, achievements and success of businesses across the Sunshine Coast and are a key action of the Regional Economic Development Strategy.

Chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards management committee Jennifer Swaine said the awards highlight the best and most innovative businesses we have in the region and are the largest of their type in regional Australia.

“Several local winners go on to win higher accolades, such as Hinterland Feijoas, who recently placed in the Produce Awards for Queensland and will now go through to national judging,” Ms Swaine said.

“We are super proud when our Sunshine Coast businesses show the rest of Australia the depth of our region’s business talent.”
