Today, years of planning and development finally came to fruition as SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast unveiled the brand new Little Blue Penguins exhibit, which is now home to the only penguins on the Sunshine Coast. To mark the momentous occasion, the new penguin colony were treated to a celebratory feast, comprised of their favourite treats – pilchard, small whiting, whitebait and squid!
Officially open to the public from tomorrow, (Friday 13th December), the new Little Blue Penguins zone is set to a cool temperature with plants, rocky shores and sand to create a comfortable environment for the flippered friends to breed, moult and rest. As this species of penguin generally spends 80% of their life swimming, there is an abundance cool water where they can swim and dive to their heart's content!
Guest are in for a treat, with the opportunity to be immersed in the wonderful world of the smallest penguin species – above and below the water! The iconic aquarium's new zone will take guests on a journey from an above ground observation deck to an underwater vantage point for an all-encompassing look into the life of a little penguin.
General Manager of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast, Quinn Clarke, shares the excitement; "We are so excited for visitors from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, all over Australia and the rest of the world to meet our adorable colony of little penguins in our amazing new zone. Throughout the development of this project, we have been determined to create a unique visitor experience that educates guests while being innovative and fun. We're confident we've achieved that, and welcome all our guests to come in and meet the Sunshine Coast's only colony of penguins!"
Mammal Manager, Carla Haskell says the new penguin colony is already settling into their new surroundings, and big personalities have already started to stand out to the keepers,. "We have a very social bunch joining the family here on the Sunshine Coast! Our colony of Little Penguins wake up at around 3am in the morning and do not stop talking all day!
"There's so many unique personalities, including Sapphire who adores the company of humans and is a real chatterbox, Burru who is very inquisitive and curious and always monitoring the comings and goings in the penguin exhibit; and our youngest male penguin, who is yet to be named. He's blessed with a beautiful, bright blue plumage and has a timid, yet cheeky personality and is a fantastic swimmer! We've bestowed the very important task of naming our littlest flippered friend to the public and I'm sure we'll have a fitting match soon."
The colony of Little Penguins will be ambassadors for their species, playing a significant role in communicating SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast's conservation values. Guests will be able to learn about the lifecycle of a Little Penguin, what they eat, and how and why we can help protect them in the wild.
Little Blue Penguins officially opens at SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast on 13 December 2019. It will be a permanent exhibit that is included in the admission price. The public can make their name suggestions to the littlest Little Blue Penguin via the SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast Facebook page here.
