BREAKING: ABC job losses

Published:

Yesterday, it was confirmed that 200 people at the ABC stand to lose their jobs, many of them from local and national newsrooms.1

It's the latest in a long line of heavy blows to our media landscape: across the country more than 100 mastheads are preparing to print their final editions, and the Australian Associated Press is hanging on thanks to some last minute investors.2,3

Right now, we need our ABC – and its world class reporting and investigative journalism – more than ever. We need to shine a light on these gut-wrenching lay-offs across the country.

So together, let's show the Morrison Government just how much Australia loves the ABC by hitting our petition target of 100,000 signatures – we are so close to the goal, every voice counts.

ABC staff have been there for us, keeping us informed through thick and thin. Now it's time for us to stand with them by making sure these lay-offs don't get swept under the rug.

Will you sign the petition to the Morrison Government, demanding that the ABC be fully funded?

Just last month, a report released by GetUp revealed the ABC stands to lose $783 million in funding since the Coalition came into power in 2013.4

That's over one thousand jobs cut, beloved programmes such as Lateline axed, and bureaus shut down.

Reaching 100,000 petition signatures is a key step in the campaign to stop these cuts.

The more people who show their support for the ABC, the more the Government will see how loved the ABC is. If we keep up this pressure, together we can stop the funding cuts and save our ABC.

Can you sign the petition to the Morrison Government demanding that the ABC be fully funded?

Meanwhile, we're also focusing our efforts on the current by-election in Eden-Monaro. Working with local GetUp members in this strategic electorate, we're listening to what the ABC means to regional communities.

What we're hearing is clear – the ABC is trusted, it is needed, and it saved countless lives during the devastating bushfires that ravaged this corner of NSW.

We're making sure that these messages are heard loud and clear by the candidates, while the eyes of the nation are watching.

Thanks to thousands of GetUp members who chipped in to make this work possible, we're rolling out a hard-hitting advertising campaign, engaging with candidates, and amplifying the voices of Eden-Monaro's many supporters of the ABC.

Will you sign the petition to the Morrison Government, demanding that the ABC be fully funded?

With a strong national campaign running alongside our work in Eden-Monaro, we're confident we can achieve change. But the campaign needs you.

Show your support for the ABC today and join the fight. Click here to take action now!

Yours in solidarity,
Alix, Tosca, Sarah and Bea - for the GetUp team
