Centenarians art project builds inter-generational relationships

Published:

An art project featuring portraits of Queensland centenarians, painted by young artists, will be the feature event of Queensland Seniors Week (August 17 – 25) this year.

The project, ‘100: A Celebration of Queensland’s Oldest Residents, as part of the Centenarian Portrait Project by Teenagers’, features 100 portraits of Queensland seniors that have been painted by 100 teenagers.

Minister for Seniors Coralee O’Rourke today (18 August) officially launched the exhibition, which will be on display at the Seven Hills Hub in Brisbane until 1 September 2019.

“The Palaszczuk Government is proud to support this fantastic project, which captures so much of what makes Seniors Week such a success,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“Like Seniors Week, building inter-generational relationships has been at the heart of this project with the teenage artists spending time interacting with the centenarians and learning about their lives.

“I offer my congratulations to the artists and centenarians who have participated in this project, and the organisers, Embraced Inc.

“Queenslanders of all ages are sure to enjoy this project and I definitely recommend Queenslanders come and see it for themselves.”

This year Queensland Seniors Week features some 840 events and activities across the state.

Mrs O’Rourke said the Palaszczuk Government was proud to support Queensland Seniors Week and sponsor the Centenarians Portrait Project.

“Our support for this exciting project demonstrates our commitment to making Queensland an age-friendly state, where Queenslanders regardless of their age or personal circumstances, are able to participate in their communities and enjoy social and economic wellbeing,” she said.

The artworks will be on display from 11am to 5pm daily at Seven Hills Hub, 28 Tallowwood Street, Seven Hills.
