Child Protection Week: How You Can Support Children & Families

Published:

1-7 September is Child Protection Week, a time to remember we all have a role to play in protecting children from harm and supporting families.

This year’s theme shines a spotlight on the fact, based on evidence from the Frameworks Institute research commissioned by the Parenting Research Centre, that kids do well when parents are supported, and to raise thriving kids, parents need support to navigate life’s choppy waters.

SunnyKids CEO Chris Turner shared that the theme of this year’s Child Protection Week reflects the values of SunnyKids and their position that ‘it takes a village’ to see children reach their full potential.

“At SunnyKids, we provide a social and emotional safety net for thousands of children and their families through our award-winning ‘Virtual Village’ practice model.

“We also offer up to 8,000 nights of emergency accommodation, as well as domestic violence and referral counselling, each and every year to local families in need. We partner with health, education and child protection agencies to keep kids safe.

“Our underlying, driving belief is that any issue is not the child’s problem to fix, nor is it the family’s or the community’s problem alone. It requires a community solution in which everyone takes responsibility and works together, empowering us all,” explained Chris.

The SunnyKids Virtual Village uses five key areas to identify and secure the support that atrisk children, young people and families need to overcome issues and be their best. Each of these areas is important and they mesh to ensure a child’s wellbeing.

With government funding only covering a portion of the amount needed to make meaningful change to Sunshine Coast children and their families, SunnyKids undertakes many fundraising activities to fill the gap.

“SunnyKids has received great support from the local community through our three signature events, along with our wonderful child sponsors, corporate partners and business philanthropists in our P100 membership that has enabled us to help hundreds more kids in our community.

“However, we are currently only able reach around 20% of the kids that need our services.

So, as our work continues, we seek the community’s support to volunteer their time, become a SunnyKids Village Buddy or support us through donations,” said Chris.

“We need for this support to be what we naturally do on the Sunshine Coast; we come together as a Village and look after those vulnerable kids.

“If 5000 people, families and businesses sponsored a local child for $50 per month, all the kids we worry most about on the Sunshine Coast would get the help they need!” shared Chris.
