Cuts to our services

Elections Political Queensland Government

If Tim Nicholls and the LNP win the next Queensland election they will make around $11.6 billion worth of cuts to the budget. But they won't say where the cuts will fall.

These cuts would go further than the cuts made by LNP when they were last in government under Campbell Newman in 2012-2015.

In their policies the LNP are using an ideological definition of "budget deficit" that will give them more opportunity to make cuts to public sector jobs and services.

The only way Tim Nicholls and the LNP can deliver on their election spending commitments is to make cuts to public services and jobs, like they did in 2012-15.

These are the facts:

  • On Monday 30 October the LNP released their "Back in Business" policy, which committed them to $11.6 billion worth of cuts to the current budget to reach their fiscal targets over four years.
  • This figure is equivalent to about 22,500 public sector jobs in Queensland.
  • When Tim Nicholls was Campbell Newman's right hand man in government, they cut 14,000 jobs and tried to privatise public services like health through "contestability" – even though they went to an election promising "no forced redundancies" and that public servants had "nothing to fear".

Queenslanders and their families are still recovering from the impact of the last LNP government's cuts to jobs and services. If in government – either on their own or as part of an alliance with One Nation – the LNP will go too far again.

Either Tim Nicholls won't deliver on his election promises – or he will cut services and jobs like he did when he was Campbell Newman's right-hand man.
