Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace today called on the Member for
Gympie, David Gibson, to publicly oppose any future LNP move to
put tolls on the Bruce Highway.
Mr Wallace said Mr Gibson needed to stand up for his constituents and hit tolls on the head after the LNP's Jeff Seeney refused to rule out putting tolls on the Bruce Highway in a recent media interview.
Mr Wallace said the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra was the likely place to put tolls on the Bruce in the Gympie region.
"I call on David Gibson to say he will not have a bar of tolls at the Burdekin Bridge or anywhere else on the Bruce in the Gympie region," he said.
"Former Brisbane Mayor Campbell Newman is a toll junkie who will try to bring Brisbane-style road tolls to Far North Queensland."
Mr Wallace said the Bruce Highway needed a massive upgrade because the Howard Government had only spent an average of $100 million a year on the national highway for 12 years.
"The Howard Government, which included many current LNP members, stuffed up the Bruce and now they want North Queensland motorists to pay for their stuff-up," he said.
In contrast, the Gillard Government is providing an average of $480 million a year.
"I give credit to the Gillard Government for this big increase in funding for the Bruce but we still need to strongly boost Federal funding for the Queensland's lifeline highway," Craig Wallace said.
