FIRE up your passion for all things hot and take centre stage at the Hot91 Ignite Chilli Festival Saturday 17 November.
Up to 15 brave souls will wrangle for the mantle of Chilli Overlord at this year’s chilli eating competition. The winner will take home a trophy, chilli hamper and the entrants’ cash prize pool.
To be held on the main stage at Caloundra’s Bulcock Street Ignite Chilli Festival event on 17 November from 2pm, the challenge will feature a range of chillis and chilli products from the meek and mild through to the dreaded Carolina Reaper.
Responsible for last year’s hospitalisation of Hot91FM’s Dave Matthews, the Reaper was certified by Guinness World Records in 2013 as the world’s hottest chilli pepper.
"I love chilli, I really do but the Grim Reaper Chilli lives up to her name. This chilli is hotter than the devil's undies, it's straight from the pit of hell. I had to be taken to hospital and given medication to reline my stomach & it took me about 6 months before I was even able to look at another chilli." - Dave Matthews, Hot 91 Breakfast Team said.
The incident left a mark on the entire breakfast team, with co-hosts Sam and Ash who are thrilled to hear the event is returning in late November.
"After the "Dave incident," last year, as concerned colleagues, we had to race Dave to the hospital after he had a Carolina Reaper, (after we took videos and photos of him on the bathroom floor sick, of course.) We got a little worried about our mate, but then we got over it and we're even more excited when we heard the news that the Ignite Chilli Festival is coming back for round 2 in 2018! Hey Dave, seconds?" - Sam & Ash
Crowned winner in 2016 and 2017, Golden Beach’s Paul Norsgaard has again signalled his interest in this year’s competition and will be the one to beat for all for all of those hardened chilli enthusiasts.
To register for the competition visit Vicki at Red Hot Chilli Pepper on Festival day. Registrations are $15.
