Fly the flag with pride on National Flag Day

Published:

Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien is encouraging everyone to fly the Australian flag on Tuesday, September 3, to celebrate the flag's 118th anniversary.

The Australian flag is the symbol of our nation, our people, our customs and traditions.

The Australian flag was first flown above the Melbourne Exhibition Building on September 3, 1901, when it identified us to the world as a new, independent and unified nation.

Its design was selected from more than 32,823 entries submitted to the Federal Flag Design competition in 1901, such was the strong interest in a national emblem to represent our newly-created country.

The flag reminds us of our strong and successful history as a Commonwealth nation and unifies us in both good times and sad times.

It has been a constant symbol of our nation, present at significant events in Australia's history.  It is flown at schools, homes, public buildings, sporting events, on vessels, and flies above Parliament House in Canberra.

The flag represents Australians who are known throughout the world for our generosity, fairness, compassion, tolerance, decency and humour.

The flag also reflects the ideals of all Australians and the pride we have in our nation that is felt in every community across Australia.

I encourage all Australians to celebrate with pride the 118th anniversary of the Australian National Flag.
