Have you ever wondered where your recyclable materials go after they’re placed in our yellow lid bins?
For Sunshine Coast residents the answer is simple – the material travels to our council-owned Material Recovery Facility (or MRF) at the Nambour Resource Recovery Centre.
As part of Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week (November 13– 20), council is helping educate residents by holding a free Recycle Right Open Day on November 18, where everything there is to know about recycling will be revealed.
Environment Portfolio Cr Jenny McKay said our local recycling facility had processed 42,063 tonnes of recyclable material this year.
“Under the contract we have with the managers of this facility, all recyclable material must be beneficially reused,” Cr McKay said.
“Glass bottles are made back into jars, bottles, or even used in road base, and our plastic milk cartons are used to create a range of products including the wheelie bins we all use for our recycling and household waste.”
Cr McKay encouraged people to visit council’s website and secure their spot for Saturday’s open day to learn more about how to improve their recycling at home.
“We know that the Sunshine Coast community are constantly raising the bar when it comes to recycling rates, but there’s always more you can learn,” she said.
“Plastic bags, for example, can’t go in your yellow-lid bin at home. Likewise, drinking glasses can’t be recycled, but empty glass bottles can be.
“It’s worth coming along to take a tour through our Resource Recovery Centre and find out how you can reduce, reuse and recycle everyday household items.”
