Goodbye Clive Palmer?

A billionaire bought our 2019 election.

Clive Palmer has admitted his $83 million election spend "secured the Coalition governments win with his preferences".1,2

It's a terrifying precedent – and left unchallenged could unleash a tidal wave of big money influence next election.

But next Tuesday, we have a chance to make sure it doesn't happen again.

We're appearing in front of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters. It's our chance to talk directly to the Government and set the agenda on what legislative change is needed to protect our democracy – including putting a cap on electoral expenditure like Clive Palmer's.

Our power comes in numbers. If we can present a 50,000 signature strong petition to the committee, demanding political expenditure be capped, it will be a clear mandate for the government to get big money out of parliament.

✍️ Have your voice heard in the official hearing: Our democracy cannot be bought.

Putting a cap on the amount individuals, political parties and third parties can spend on elections would break the corporate stranglehold on our politics – reducing the power and influence of billionaires and big donors like the fossil fuel industry.

The 2019 election showed that big money controls our politics. Palmer outspent all major parties combined on a huge ad blitz that deliberately "polarised electorates" and restrained political debate.3,4

Palmer is not the type of person we want controlling the political agenda. He has a terrible record on workers' rights and he wants to build a climate-destroying megamine in the Galilee Basin.5,6,7

✍️ Demand caps on political expenditure

Getting big money out of politics isn't about being progressive or conservative. It's about democracy.

That's exactly the message we'll be delivering to the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters. Will you add your name to the thousands who are demanding the protection of our democratic rights?
