THE CLIMATE COUNCIL has described Australia's 12 month review of climate change policies as a farce as there are no new policies to tackle Australia's rising pollution.
Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie said that today's release is another wasted opportunity for the Federal Government to act on climate change, with the Climate Review failing to offer any new credible policies or solutions to tackle climate change.
"This situation is just like unwrapping a gift on Christmas morning and finding there's nothing inside, just an empty box - in fact it's the same unwanted present you received last year. Australians should feel ripped off."
"It is very disappointing that after a year long process, with input from experts around the country, that we still lack a credible policy offering from the federal government. There is no escaping the evidence, Australia's pollution just keeps rising which makes absolutely clear the Federal government is not doing enough."
"Australia already is on the frontline when it comes to copping the brunt of worsening climate change, from the repeated bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef, through to worsening extreme weather events such as supercharged storms, severe heatwaves and bushfires," she said.
"This Climate Review will not protect Australians from intensifying extreme weather as it does not tackle the root cause of the problem - rising fossil fuel pollution."
"The Climate Review may have failed to lay the foundations of strong climate and energy policy, but we still have the opportunity to act. The solution is clear - Australia must continue to embrace the transition to clean, affordable and reliable renewable energy and storage technology to cut pollution levels and tackle climate change."
"Fortunately in the absence of Federal leadership state and local governments are rolling up their sleeves and getting on with the job."
