Introducing your Captain and Vice Captain for 2019 ⚡

Published:

Sunshine Coast Lightning has appointed a new leadership team, naming Laura Langman as Captain and Karla Pretorius as Vice-Captain.

The foundation players will lead the team into Season 3 of the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN), with Round 1 less than two weeks away.

The pair come highly credentialed, in the Suncorp Super Netball Competition and internationally, and will steer Lightning into the next chapter following back-to-back premierships.

Langman was part of Lightning’s inaugural leadership group alongside Bassett and Mentor and took on the captaincy role with the Silver Ferns in 2018. Langman returned to the Club this season, with 151 test caps, she has represented New Zealand in three World Cups (2007, 2011, 2015) as well as three Commonwealth Games (2006, 2010, 2014).

Pretorius has continued to go from strength-to-strength in her time at Lightning, named Club Player of the Year, alongside Steph Wood last year and Player of the Series in the 2019 January Quad Series. Karla currently holds the Vice-Captain role for the SPAR Proteas, has 77 international caps, and is widely recognised as a stand out defender, also being named in the Super Netball team of the year (2018).

Newly appointed Captain Laura Langman said the 2019 SSN season was all about returning to the court and performing week in and week out.

“I am quite humbled to represent our Club and to continue to build on the successes of the past two seasons,” Langman said.

“As a foundation team member, the captaincy is a bonus and to see how quickly the Club has grown on and off the court is fantastic.”

"Whilst being named Captain, we are fortunate to have many leaders within the group which will continue to lead us in 2019. It will be business as usual for me come game time".

Lightning Coach Noeline Taurua said the Club is incredibility lucky to have such a leaderful team, so naming the Captain and Vice-Captain was always going to be a challenge.

“Similar to the process we undertook in 2017, we engaged the playing group to vote. It was important for us to understand where the group was at and who they wanted to see captain the squad.

“Laura and Karla are two of our foundation athletes at Lightning and have played critical roles in developing the culture of the team both on and off court.

“Now we are looking forward to getting on court and stamping our mark on the SSN competition once again.”

The 2019 SSN kicks off on Saturday 27 April. Lightning will take on the Magpies at Melbourne Arena at 5.30pm. Membership and ticket information is available at sunshinecoastlightning.com.au
