Business and tourism industry professionals - Jennifer Swaine and Zoe Sparks - have been appointed to join the Visit Sunshine Coast Board as member-elected directors.

Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) has welcomed industry professionals, Jennifer Swaine and Zoe Sparks, to their board.

Ms Swaine has extensive experience in business on the Sunshine Coast. She is Chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards, an Executive of the Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance and runs her own marketing and communications business.

Ms Sparks has worked in travel and events for the past 29 years and launched Spectacular Events and Spectacular World Travel on the Sunshine Coast in 2000. She was contracted as Jetset Travelworld’s Group Conference Manager - now Helloworld Travel – for nineteen of these years.

The VSC Board is made up of industry, business and local community representatives in six skill-based and three member-elected positions.

VSC Board Chair David Ryan welcomed the appointment of Ms Swaine and Ms Sparks to the Board.

“Jennifer and Zoe bring to Visit Sunshine Coast an incredible knowledge of, and passion for, the Sunshine Coast, with extensive experience in tourism business,” Mr Ryan said.

“They will be able to provide valuable insights as we move in to 2020, which is shaping up as one of the most exciting years in the region’s tourism evolution.

“The launch of the new international-capable runway at Sunshine Coast Airport in 2020 will help accelerate the momentum achieved in 2019, with record domestic and international visitor numbers.

“The region is also in the process of seeing a number of new accommodation projects commence in 2020, along with other major infrastructure projects that will establish the Sunshine Coast as a multi-faceted tourism, conference, events and business destination.

“The Board plays an important role in providing expert guidance to VSC and the wider tourism industry, and the addition of Jennifer and Zoe will help ensure that we have the best professional resources to represent the interests of our members and stakeholders.

“I would also like to thank our outgoing member-elected board members, Bill Darby and Sarah Pye, for their extraordinary contribution to the region’s tourism industry.”

Ms Swaine said she was delighted to have been appointed to the VSC Board.

“I am passionate about this region and all that we have to offer. In particular, we are now in a great position with facilities that can accommodate and deliver on world-class business events, conferences and retreats and this is a sector that I believe has huge potential for growth,” she said.

“We are fortunate to live in a region where there is abundant beauty and natural resources everywhere you look, and with all our beautiful towns and villages all offering something special and unique in terms of dining, food, accommodation and attractions it's little wonder more and more people are choosing to not only visit us - but are lingering a little longer and that is only going to grow.”

On her appointment to the VSC Board, Ms Sparks said: “The Sunshine Coast has really come of age, especially over the last couple of years.

“I’m delighted to be appointed to the Visit Sunshine Coast Board as we are about to launch into a new decade that is filled with opportunity in a wide number of areas. Without a doubt it’s exciting times ahead and I’m thrilled to be given the chance to contribute.”

At the recent VSC AGM on 20 November, Board Chair David Ryan and Ashley Howden were also reappointed as skill-based directors.

The news comes as VSC prepares to welcome a new Head of Marketing at the beginning of 2020: Jo Prothero.

Ms Prothero will commence her role at VSC on 13 January 2020, and VSC CEO Simon Latchford said he was delighted to welcome her to the team.

“Jo’s extensive experience in destination marketing and events tourism – most recently as Director Marketing and Communications at Falls Creek Resort in Victoria – makes her a natural fit for Visit Sunshine Coast,” he said.

“I am confident Jo will bring a wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas to her role as Head of Marketing to deliver a new era of tourism success on the Sunshine Coast.”
