Sunshine Coast children are encouraged to join more than one million youngsters from across the nation for a mass storytime event on May 22.

In celebration of National Simultaneous Storytime, children can head to Sunshine Coast Council Libraries and parks, joining thousands of schools, libraries and playgroups across Australia to read the same book at 11am on Wednesday, May 22.

National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual event, run by the Australian Library and Information Association that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.

Now in its 19th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant and fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy.

Each year an Australian children's book that explores age appropriate themes and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for grades one to six is chosen.

This year the National Simultaneous Storytime book is Alpacas with Maracas by Matt Cosgrove.

Macca and his best pal, Al, enter a talent contest. Shaking and shimmying, they give it their best and put on a performance to remember.

Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said more than one million participants at more than 8200 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime in 2018, the biggest, most successful year yet.

“This year, we’re looking forward to seeing plenty of Sunshine Coast kids come together again to read Alpacas with Maracas at the same time as everyone else around the country,” Cr McKay said.

“This annual event reinforces the First 5 Forever program which encourages parents and caregivers to talk, read, sing and play with their child every day.”
