Labor's job-training catastrophe revealed

Published:

New data from the National Centre for Vocational and Educational Training has shown Labor's shocking record on traineeships and apprenticeships.

Since the Palaszczuk Labor Government was elected in 2015, traineeships and apprenticeships numbers have been in freefall.

Course completions have fallen by almost 33% under Labor and there are almost 15% or 9,995 fewer students in training.

In the last year alone apprenticeship and traineeship commencements fell by almost 6%.

"When it comes vocational and education training Labor gets an 'F' for fail," LNP Shadow Training and Skills Minister Fiona Simpson said.

"Labor are all talk and no action when it comes to training young people for jobs.

"The figures show that skills training has been in freefall under the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

"Labor has failed employers, our economy and our young people."

Queensland has the second worst unemployment rate in the country, the highest number of long-term unemployed workers and the highest youth unemployment rate in Australia.

Ms Simpson said an LNP Government would give employers, training and employee representatives a seat at the table by creating a Queensland Industry Skills Council that will engage directly with the Training Minister.

The LNP will also work with regional skills boards that assess local training shortages, as every region has different needs.

Under an LNP Government, businesses will have the confidence to invest in young Queenslanders and train our future workforce.

"The Palaszczuk Labor Government doesn't have a budget or an economic plan to create more jobs, while traineeships and apprenticeships numbers have fallen off a cliff," Ms Simpson said.

"Only the LNP has a plan to build a stronger economy, create a decade of secure jobs and lead Queensland out of this recession."

Background

  • There are also 9,995 fewer Queenslanders 'in-training' between December 2014 and December 2019 (14.8% reduction).
  • Completions between December 2014 and December 2019 declined by 32.7% or 10,885
