Letter - Dying With Dignity - Election Opportunity

NOTE: This article is older than 12 months

Dear Editor

Congratulations to Local Greens candidate, Jim McDonald, for committing to introduce legislation to give people with terminal illness the choice between palliative care and ending their own life.  "Greens Candidate says jail for assisted suicide is wrong solution"

The recent jailing of a Brisbane man for assisting a stroke victim to end his life highlights the failure of the Queensland Government and the Opposition to introduce dying with dignity legislation. This failure of the major parties causes immense pain and trauma to thousands of people and shows contempt for the democratic process when surveys show 80% of Australians believe voluntary euthanasia should be a legal option. Contrary to popular belief, a majority of Christians also support voluntary euthanasia.

What are the major parties waiting for when there are clear models of workable legislation in Europe and the USA?   Where is the CanDo on this issue?

If you feel strongly about this issue, give your first preference to Jim McDonald on election date and your second preference to the major party of your choice and let your local Liberal National Party and Labor candidates know why you are voting that way.

Yours sincerely
John Woodlock
