Lightning players catch experts' eyes as we await the 2020 season

Published:

While we all eagerly await news on the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) season multiple Sunshine Coast Lightning players have been in demand, albeit in fantasy teams selected by fans and experts alike.

Laura Langman and Karla Pretorius (alongside inaugural Lightning Coach Noeline Taurua) had the prestigious honour of being named in the fan voted ‘All Time Suncorp Super Netball Team’.

Each week Netball Australia polled its fans to determine who was the best SSN player in each position throughout the competition’s history.

Langman won the majority of fan votes to be named at Centre, meanwhile 72% of the votes went Pretorius’s way when it came to locking down the Goal Defence role.

Channel 9’s expert commentary team also weighed in on their favourite current players, with Liz Ellis, Laura Geitz, Cath Cox and Sharni Layton participating in a Fantasy Draft.

Over a number of weeks, the hosts took turns in selecting a squad of 7 players and 1 reserve, with 4 of Lightning’s own named across the fantasy teams.

In the fantasy draft standings, Laura Geitz used her first two selections to pick both Laura Langman (No. 3) and Karla Pretorius (No. 6).

Geitz continued to favour the Lightning side with Steph Wood rounding out her 4th round selection at number 14.

The final Lightning player was snatched up by Sharni Layton at pick 17 of the fantasy draft, in midcourter Laura Scherian.

If only we could see these teams go head to head in a live netball tournament!

The Super Netball League Commission is due to make an announcement on the 2020 Suncorp Super Netball Season no later than 31 May.
