Sunshine Coast Lightning is looking to cement its top-three position on the Suncorp Super Netball ladder as the team prepares to take on NSW Swifts in Sydney this weekend.

Lightning Head Coach Noeline Taurua said she anticipated ladder positions obtained over the next two weeks would provide a fair indication of how the table would lie for the remainder of the season.

“The competition is currently very tight with minimal points separating the teams in second, third, fourth and fifth position,” Taurua said.

“Our bonus points have served us well to date and we need to make sure we capitalise on every opportunity that presents itself in the upcoming rounds.”

Taurua said Swifts players were likely to put up a strong fight at the upcoming game, following their narrow win against Adelaide Thunderbirds in Round 6.

“One of the difficult things about Swifts is that they’ve been playing all 10 players and that makes them a very hard team to analyse,” she said.

“Helen Housby – who’s arguably one of the best goal attacks in the league – has delivered some blinder performances this season.

“All of their midcourt players are skilful grafters and the defence will contest and compete for every ball.

“With the additional factor of having to play Swifts on their home soil, this game is definitely going to be a challenge.”

Lightning player Steph Wood said Swifts team members were currently performing well across the board, with Housby also having dominated at the Commonwealth Games.

“They’re in really good form and they’re one of those teams you definitely can’t take lightly,” she said.

“This match could really consolidate our position in the top four or we could drop back out, so it is a very important game.

“We’re striving to win every bonus point and will definitely be playing each quarter to the last minute.”

Sunshine Coast Lightning will play NSW Swifts this Sunday, 17 June at Qudos Bank Arena. The match will be broadcast live on Telstra TV and the Netball Live App.
