Lightning storms into grand final

Sunshine Coast Lightning has secured a spot in the Suncorp Super Netball grand final, defeating GIANTS Netball at Qudos Bank Arena today.
Lightning will face West Coast Fever in Perth next Sunday, with the team defending their title as the reigning Suncorp Super Netball champions.
Lightning midcourter Laura Scherian said in taking on Fever, the team would be looking at mixing up its defence strategy.
“We need to combat the change in the shooting end and put some more pressure out the front,” Scherian said.
“I think our connections in attack have become so much stronger as the season has progressed and we’re very excited to make this final.
“Any ball we get we need to score off.”
Scherian said Lightning had made an effort to force GIANTS’ shooters wide in today’s preliminary final clash.
“We were trying to do our one-on-one defence and keep them wide. They’re a very smart attack and we had to force them apart so that we could create opportunities for our defenders.
“We really didn’t want to let go of that lead we generated as the game progressed and we focused on using the energy in the stadium to bring the win home.”
Lightning captain Geva Mentor said the game had proved a tough contest on all areas of the court.
“We knew GIANTS weren’t going to let off and it certainly was physical out there. I’m so pleased that we managed to hang in there strong and push out that lead,” Mentor said.
“When it comes to taking on Fever next week, both teams have got the capability to go all the way. It’s just about who brings their A-game and who finishes it off in the dying seconds.
“We’re eager to get over there. It’s quite uncanny that last year the grand final was on the east coast and now it’s on the west coast, so it’s great for netball in Australia that we’re sharing it around.”
The Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final will be held at Perth Arena on Sunday, 26 August at 1pm AEST. The match will be broadcast live on the Nine Network and Netball Live app.
