Federal Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien is recognising the valuable work of Landcare volunteers in protecting Wide Bay's environment, with more than $10,00 in grants.

Three Wide Bay Landcare groups will be provided with funding through a $20 million Volunteer Grants program to help provide safety and first aid equipment, office technology, and other essential  equipment.

Mr O'Brien and Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud announced the following grants today:

  • Tiaro & District Landcare - $3,100 for a shade marquee, fuel costs and stationery.
  • Noosa and District Landcare Group Inc Pomona  - $4,858 for defibrillators, sun-safe uniforms, and tablets to access plant identification apps.
  • Gympie & District Landcare Inc - $2,271 for a refrigerator, and a tablet to help with carrying out stock inventory and seed collection.

"Landcare volunteers understand the importance of protecting and caring for the land so we are able to preserve Wide Bay's pristine natural environment and also pass on productive and healthy farms to future generations," Mr O'Brien said.

"These grants honour the work of these volunteers, and show Coalition Government is backing their efforts to care for the land they love.

"Wide Bay simply would not be the same without volunteers, who are the lifeblood of our communities.

"The energy, expertise and time they give represents what Australian communities are all about – offering a helping hand."

Mr O'Brien said volunteering had a significant economic benefit to local communities.

"The enormous value of volunteering is estimated at $290 billion per year. Australia's 8.7 million volunteers and their organisations are the backbone of community life," he said.

"The Morrison Government's strong economic management is why we can afford to provide the essential services Australians rely on and support the good work of our volunteers."
