Llew O’Brien rolls out $20,000 for Independent Riders Workshops

Published:

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack (L) and Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien (R) meet with Maryborough Independent Riders volunteers.

Member for Wide Bay Llew O'Brien is delivering $20,000 for security, equipment and laptops at Independent Riders Workshop in Maryborough to help disengaged youths.

"The Independent Riders Workshops are helping disadvantaged young people on the Fraser Coast learn practical skills by building electric bikes, which boosts their confidence and gives them better opportunities for success in future employment," Mr O'Brien said.

"This funding will provide six laptops, to help improve the numeracy and literacy of participants, as well as safety equipment, welding jackets, workshop equipment and a security system to keep the premises safe."

Mr O'Brien said Independent Riders Workshops played an important role in helping Maryborough youths, and he was pleased to be able to help the volunteer-run organisation.

"We can all be proud of the work Independent Riders does and because these workshops make a real difference to the wellbeing of our youths.  This funding will help them to deliver the programs that give young people the skills and confidence to find work," he said.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and Mr O'Brien visited the Kent Street premises to chat with volunteers and announce the funding yesterday.

"The Liberals and Nationals Government invests in local projects like these because we understand Australia is made of more than big infrastructure projects, and our regional communities run on small, volunteer-led organisations like Independent Riders," Mr O'Brien said.

"When I heard about the great work that Independent Riders is doing to help our local youths, I fought to get this funding for their project, and I'm happy that I have been able to deliver this funding for the Maryborough community."
