LNP calls on Labor to appeal Shane Akehurst sentence

Published:

LNP Shadow Attorney-General David Janetzki has called on the Labor Palaszczuk Government to get tough on child killers and immediately appeal the sentence of Shane Pursell Akehurst for the torture and manslaughter of his son Corby.

"Corby's short life ended horrifically, and we need to ensure a tragedy like this never happens again." Mr Janetzki said.

"We need to send a very strong message about the value of human life - especially the lives of our vulnerable, innocent and precious children.

"That is why this sentence still falls short of community expectations and must be appealed.

"This sentence is also further proof on why we need to implement the LNP's proposed child killer laws.

"Unlike Labor, the LNP can guarantee violent child killers will be locked away for a minimum of 15 years for child manslaughter and a minimum of 25 years for murder.

"Child killers are the worst of the worst and only the LNP has a plan to jail these monsters for a very long time.

"My thoughts are with the extended family and friends of Corby, as they continue to deal with unimaginable grief."
