The LNP has joined the Rural Fire Brigades Association Queensland (RFBAQ) in calling on the Labor Palaszczuk Government to extend the consultation period on the Inspector-General bushfire review.

Shadow Minister for Fire, Emergency Services and Volunteers Lachlan Millar MP said the Minister needs to listen to the concerns raised by the RFBAQ about consultation timeframes.

“Landholders, emergency services workers and regional communities deserve to have a fair dinkum review,” Mr Millar said.

“Rural fire fighters are concerned about the January 25 cut-off date for submissions.

“Locals have only been given five weeks to make submissions and many have been busy preparing for cyclones or on Christmas holidays.

“That is why the LNP called for a full and open Parliamentary Inquiry.

“It would have given everyone the opportunity to have their say, with regional hearings listening to the concerns about the impacts of the devastating fires and how it can be prevented in the future.

“The LNP backs the RFBAQ and I urge the Premier to do the same and extend the deadline.”

Leader Deb Frecklington has also recommended formal recognition for the men and woman who helped contain Queensland’s catastrophic bushfires.

Ms. Frecklington has written to the National Emergency Medal Committee in Canberra asking them to consider opening a citation application process.

In the past, the National Emergency Medal has been awarded to people who worked or volunteered during the Victorian Bushfires in 2009 and the Queensland floods of 2010-2011 and Cyclone Yasi.
