Debra Jenkings was named the Local CAREGiver of the Year for Sunshine Coast, announced by Home Instead Senior Care.
Debra currently lives in Maroochydore and is a highly valued member of the team, based in Maroochydore. She has worked as a CAREGiver for over 8 years, completing approximately 11,000 hours of service and making an incredible impact on the lives of her clients.
She had a career in banking and finance for 15 years but after moving interstate, discovered Home Instead Senior Care and became a CAREGiver. It was her calling as she had many long-term relationships with elderly customers in her previous job and had cared for her mother-in-law who had a stroke and was wheelchair bound.
Debra is detailed orientated for each client, even cooking homemade meals for them to enjoy. She has strong relationships with clients and their families, being honest and making communication a priority. Her clients benefit from outdoor walks and activities such as jigsaw puzzles, games and singing.
She has established relationships and trust with difficult clients, even when other CAREGivers have struggled. One of her clients who has Bipolar Disorder and was depressed now enjoys weekly art classes.
Debra has completed extra training around brain function and dementia. She was also selected from 80 staff to advise on the office’s policy and procedure and areas required for further training.
“I am thrilled to receive this award,” says Debra. “I love that I can help seniors live a more fulfilling life and finding enjoyment in everyday life. It is truly life changing and I’m glad I can make a difference.”
“Debra is patient, empathetic and observant to clients’ needs,” says Jodie McCarthy, HR, Engagement and Recruitment Officer at Home Instead Senior Care Sunshine Coast.
“She goes the extra mile for each client and also helps other CAREGivers develop relationships with more difficult clients.”
