Friday 23rd August will see 120 local lawyers swap the court room for the golf course as they come together to play golf and raise much needed funds for our local Sunshine Coast Community Legal Service (SCLS)
The Suncoast Community Legal Service is an independent, non-profit community organisation providing legal advice, referrals and education. Many of the lawyers playing on Friday give their time pro bono to help those in our community who could not otherwise afford it.
Principal Solicitor of the SCLS, Julian Porter said, "at its most basic the SCLS organises volunteer lawyers to come and give free legal advice to people from the community who wouldn't be able to get advice otherwise and it's what we have done for the past 35 years.
"We are very fortunate that the lawyers on the Sunshine Coast are all committed to supporting what we do, so that together we can ensure some of the most vulnerable people in our community can access good legal advice should they need it."
The Sunshine Coast Law Association (SCLA) are behind Friday's annual golf fund raiser. Their ongoing support is vital since, in recent years the SCLS has received less government funding.
President of the SCLA, Samantha Bolton said, "Supporting the work of the SCLS is important to all of our members. It allows us the chance to give back and really make a difference in the lives of others.
"It also provides our younger lawyers with invaluable experience and keeps those of us, who have been around a bit longer, to remain connected with the broader community," she said.
The annual golf day has raised in excess of $150,000 for the SCLS over the past 15 years, which has helped to keep this much needed service alive.
And thanks to many local sponsors who have provided goods and services for this year's annual golf day the team is hoping to raise another $11,000 on Friday.
