LNP Shadow Minister for Manufacturing Andrew Powell has warned Annastacia Palaszczuk's latest manufacturing tax will be fatal for an industry that has been on life support after four years of Labor.
"Under Labor, more than 18,000 manufacturing jobs have already been lost in Brisbane, Townsville, Toowoomba, Mackay and Cairns," Mr Powell said.
"With well over half of all domestic gas consumption being used by Queensland manufacturers, Labor's new half a billion dollar tax will destroy thousands of jobs.
"Slugging an industry that is already struggling with a 25% tax increase will be disastrous.
"Labor's new LNG tax will increase energy and input costs and destroy manufacturing jobs.
"Similar to what happened with South Australia's auto manufacturing – Labor's latest tax on Queensland's industry may be the tipping point of irreversible decline.
"Labor's Treasurer Jackie Trad is out of touch with industry and can't even explain how her own tax works.
"A future LNP Government will stand up for manufacturing.
"The LNP will create a $20 million fund to back heavy engineering and manufacturing jobs and guarantee no new taxes.
"We will use Queensland money to help Queensland firms develop new markets in Australia and overseas."
Queensland Resources Council Chief Executive, Ian Macfarlane:
When you put up taxes someone has to pay, and in this case unfortunately that means that domestic gas users will have to reach further into their pockets.
Domestic industry and manufacturers have been struggling under the weight of higher gas bills, which can run into the millions of dollars already
An extra tax hit of more than $13 million a year will make Queensland manufacturers less competitive and it will have a bigger flow-on effect for other Australian businesses that rely on Queensland gas – 17 June 2019
