Origin Omen: Queensland Economy Going Strong

Published:

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has welcomed ABS data showing growth in the Queensland economy outstripping all other mainland states.

December quarter State Final Demand for Queensland increased by 0.5%  compared with 0.1% nationally.

New South Wales recorded an increase of 0.4%.

The ABS noted Queensland’s strong growth was driven by the State Government’s Infrastructure program.

The Premier said it was a vote of confidence in the Queensland economy.

“Last year’s budget announced  a $45.8 billion infrastructure program building the roads, schools and hospitals we need,” the Premier said.

“Sixty-five per cent of that money is being spent outside of Brisbane supporting 25,000 jobs.”

Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad said the figures are encouraging.

“We are investing in Queensland and it is paying dividends,” the Deputy Premier said.

Queensland has also recorded Australia’s strongest retail trade growth up 0.5% trend and 0.7% seasonally adjusted.

New South Wales recorded an increase of 0.2%.

Food retailing, cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services accounted for most of the retail trade growth.

Since the government was elected exports have risen by $40 billion to $84 billion – more than New South Wales and Victoria combined.

“The stronger our economy the more jobs can be provided,” the Premier said.
