New Queensland police statistics confirm that crime in the Sunshine Coast has increased under the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said these figures for reported crime across Queensland are disturbing and show that more needs to be done to tackle crime.

“When in Government, the LNP introduced tougher penalties and provided additional resources to target crime and as a result we saw crime rates across the state dramatically reduced,” Ms Simpson said.

“These disturbing figures are a result of Labor’s soft-on-crime approach.”

The 2016-17 QPS Annual Statistical Review shows that compared to the previous financial year in the Sunshine Coast Police District:

· Robbery is up 51 per cent
· Armed robbery is up 48.1 per cent
· Car theft and hooning (unlawful use of a motor vehicle) is up 17.4 per cent
· Fraud is up 29.8 per cent
· Assault is up 20.8 per cent
· Serious Assault is up 21 per cent

“Locally I hear people are very concerned about an increase in violence in our community particularly from the ICE epidemic,” Ms Simpson said.

“Our local police do a great job but it is concerning about these increases in violent offences.

“More needs to be done to get ICE off our streets and a Government that will be tough on crime.

“Only the LNP will bring back tougher laws and provide the resources our police need to keep our families safe.”
