Labor’s botched rollout of the Container Deposit Scheme means many Sunshine Coast residents and businesses have no way of doing the right thing by their hip pocket and the environment.

Visiting the Sunshine Coast today with Fiona Simpson MP and Andrew Powell MP, LNP Shadow Environment Minister David Crisafulli said Sunshine Coast residents will now pay for the scheme’s poor implementation

“It was the LNP who first championed a container deposit scheme in 2016,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“While we are glad that Labor have jumped on board, the rollout has been shambolic.

“There has been many flaws including double payments leading to misspent taxpayer dollars, closed sites, no availability of bags, large distances between sites and sites withdrawn.

“Labor Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch likes to trumpet deposit figures as the only justification of the program’s success.

“She blames CoEx for operational issues, despite the fact they are contracted by the government.”

LNP MP for Glass House Andrew Powell said the rollout of the scheme in the region was poor.

“There has been upheaval and confusion with few sites to begin with and sites shutting down,” Mr Powell said.

“For the recycling scheme to be a success, there needs to be reliability and continuity.

“We wanted the scheme to be a success but unfortunately the Palaszczuk Labor Government has botched the rollout.”

LNP MP for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said residents must be given the correct information for the scheme to be effective.

“We are hearing constituents are trying to do the right thing and recycle, but when they get to a site there are never any container bags and when they arey ring the help line they’re referred to Sydney,” Ms Simpson said.

“There is misleading information on the website about which sites have bags, leading residents on a wild goose chase.

“There is also no parking available at the main recycling depot in the electorate.

“We want Sunshine Coast residents to be able to do the right thing by their hip pocket and the environment.”
