Rugby's young entertainers set to put on a show

Still gripped by World Cup Rugby fever? You won't have to wait long for another fix!

Rugby Australia's Youth Sevens Championships are coming to Sunshine Coast Stadium on Saturday November 30 and Sunday December 1 and will feature some of Australia's most exciting up and coming Rugby talent.

Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Councillor Jason O'Pray said Sunshine Coast Stadium would provide the ideal setting for the two-day tournament, that will feature 24 teams, and more than  280 participants from around Australia.

"This event began in 2012 and has mostly been held in capital cities in previous years so we're very excited to have the chance to host it at Sunshine Coast Stadium and showcase our region to hundreds of young Rugby players and officials from around Australia," Cr O'Pray said.

"Rugby Sevens is a fantastic format of the game that will feature at next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo. It is played at an incredible pace and always features some out-of-the-box plays you wouldn't normally see in 15-man Rugby.

There'll be 60 matches played in this event across the two days so I'm sure our sports-loving community will be super keen to come out and catch the terrific action on November 30 and December 1.

"Sunshine Coast Stadium has previously hosted the Wallabies and Australian Women's Sevens side for training camps as well as a number of pre-season Super Rugby matches and it's terrific that the Rugby Australia has again put its faith in our venue to hold one of its major events."

Rugby Australia's General Manager High Performance, Ben Whitaker said: "The level of talent that we can and have discovered at these tournaments is always outstanding.

"These youth tournaments give players an opportunity to put their hands up for higher honours, and some of the players we have unearthed here have gone onto become some of our most consistent performers on the World Series.

"With less than a year to go with the Olympic Games too our selectors and coaching staff will be out in full force as well look to continue to build our national programs for both the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and beyond."
