This Friday, school students and supporters on the Sunshine Coast will build an art installation as part of a day of National action demanding PM Morrison rule out giving billions of Covid-19 recovery funds to gas.
The #FundOurFutureNotGas day of action is quickly becoming the most widespread day of action against gas in Australia's history, with hundreds of actions across Australia.
Sadie Harlow, Year 7 Student on the Sunshine Coast says, "Students want Scott Morrison to invest Covid-19 recovery funds into renewable energy that will create thousands of jobs and also help tackle climate change. Giving millions of taxpayer dollars to the polluting gas industry is an irresponsible use of public funds, and threatening our future."
"This year we are sending an accusatory stare on the federal government, telling them that "we see what you're doing" and we're horrified and furious. We need them to fund our future, not gas."
"National Covid-19 Coordination Commission is stacked with gas executives. Of course advising Scott Morrison to give millions of taxpayer dollars to their own industry. It's wrong," said Sadie. "Funding and investment should be for renewables not dirty polluting gas, gas has no future."
Our demands are:
No public funds for gas and other damaging fossil fuel projects.
Instead, recovery funds should be spent on:
1. Resourcing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions that guarantee land rights and care for country
2. The creation of jobs that fast-track solutions to the climate crisis and help communities recover
3. Projects that transition our economy and communities to 100% renewable energy by 2030, through expanded public ownership.
