Scott Morrison and Pauline Hanson's racist deal

Published:

The Morrison Government is giving concessions to racist academics to secure One Nation's Senate votes.1

In exchange for his huge hike in university fees, Scott Morrison agreed to a change in the law that could protect academics who are openly racist and sexist — including towards students.2

This is dangerous. Right-wing extremism is at an all-time high.3 And every time the government gives a legislative nod to a party defined by racism,4 it emboldens hate across the country.

Each time the Government wants to pass an unpopular bill through the Senate, they'll be tempted to do a dirty deal with One Nation — a party that promotes hate.

But in last year's election, GetUp members and our allies pressured Morrison to preference One Nation below Labor by highlighting the danger of their right-wing views.5 Even now, Education Minister Dan Tehan is refusing to fess up to his horse-trading with Pauline Hanson — so we know they fear a backlash.6

Together, we can create enough public outrage and scrutiny that it becomes politically untenable for the Morrison Government to pander to parties with racist policies as the easy way out.

Sign the petition: Show Morrison the political penalty for doing deals with One Nation.

SIGN THE PETITION

One Nation is the party that mainstreamed far-right politics.7 They brought us Fraser Anning and the racist tirade about the tragedy in Christchurch that shocked the world.8,9,10 They're the party denying climate change,11 attempting to partner with the NRA,12 and attacking the right to abortion.13

The danger is that every time the Morrison Government wants One Nation's Senate votes, they're going to give up something else — unless we stop them.

The Morrison Government can pass bills through the Senate without the opposition with the support of three Greens, Centre Alliance, or independent Senators14 — they just think the far-right is the easiest to buy off.

We have to show them they're wrong, like we have before, and give them the public backlash that making bargains with racism deserves.

Send an urgent message to the Government that our community will NEVER accept deals with politicians who spout racist hate.

At least seven universities oppose One Nation's amendment. They say "rogue academics" will have "undue protection" from the usual academic standards. Even if an academic declares "a racial, sexuality or gender prejudice" against their very own students, universities could be unable to take action.15

Our students deserve better protection than that.

One Nation's continuing soapbox in the Australian Senate legitimises racism as a political position and normalises hate everywhere — from politics to schools, universities, sports fields and pubs across the country.

Good government should be about uniting the community and celebrating our diversity — not pandering to parties that promote racism whenever it's convenient.

Will you stand with our students against racist abuse?

Now's the time to fight for what's right and make sure this Government knows it won't get away with trading on hate.

Yours in solidarity,

Amy, Naz, Anisha and Tessa
