Scott Morrison has just rejected calls for additional support for our firefighters

Alix here with a quick bushfires update... it's disgraceful.

Image of a firefighter standing on a hill looking out over the smoke. Over the top there is a newspaper headline that reads "Scott Morrison rejects calls for more assistance to firefighters"

Scott Morrison has just rejected calls for additional support for our firefighters.

These brave people are the only thing standing between us and unprecedented fire danger, and Morrison just doesn't seem to care.

He's utterly out of touch, because we value our firefighters. It's why, in just 24 hours, more than 35,000 people around the country have signed the petition demanding the government fully supports our emergency services.

As climate change makes the bushfire season longer and more intense, our firies must be able to do their jobs safely. Leaders think they can get away with inaction. We need your help to prove them wrong:

Stand with our firefighters – sign the petition to demand urgent funding for our fire services!

Take action, take care,

(In case you missed it, I've attached the email I sent on Monday below.)

You can smell it in the air.

Homes are being reduced to ash. The country is choking. You can't see the stars for the smoke. The fires burning down the east coast of Australia are out of control.

Our firefighters are the only thing standing between us and the flames, and right now, they're "stretched to breaking point."1

It has never been so hot. It has never been so dry. But in the face of the worst fire season in decades2, how are governments "supporting" our firies?

Underfunding, budget cuts and cricket.3 In Queensland, $13 million has been cut and in New South Wales, some estimates put the figure as high as $118 million.4,5

This isn't just miserly – it's shameful, it's reckless, and it's utterly out of touch with the respect and admiration we have for our firefighters.

They're out there battling for us day and night. We have to fight for them:

Will you call for urgent funding for the brave firies out there saving our homes and our lives?

The peak body for firefighters in NSW has described it as "a huge worry for us all": a decade of underfunding that has left our emergency services without the resources to respond to these emergencies, or those still to come.4

Our firefighters need the resources to fight longer and more intense fire seasons. This is vital work that the government must urgently fund. With every signature, we'll make sure premiers urgently hear from us. While so many of us are still blanketed in smoke, or worried for our homes, or grieving for friends and family -- our leaders must support the people who are running towards the fire to protect us.

✍️Add your voice! Sign the petition calling for fully funded firies.

Stand together and please stay safe,
