The weekend just past has been a very exciting and stimulating one for the Oriana Choir. March 7th, 8th and 9th marked the first round of rehearsals with world renowned conductor, music director and teacher, Jonathan Grieves-Smith. Oriana is indeed fortunate and privileged to have Jonathan on board as our Music Director for our May 18th and 19th presentation of Felix Mendelssohn’s magnificent Oratorio, Elijah.
Having spent the previous 5 weeks in learning the choruses of the first half of the work, under the tuition of our own Artistic Director, Fay Baker, we were well prepared for Jonathan to come in and engage with us. An intensive weekend of rehearsals followed, getting down to the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the music, and examining it in minute detail. To a man (and woman), the entire choir responded enthusiastically to Jonathan’s tuition, with the end result of having raised the level of our singing in this wonderful work by several notches, and bringing the choir measurably closer to performance standard.
While Jonathan was here on the Coast, he generously agreed to be interviewed on ABC Local Radio, by Jon Coghill. Many thanks to Jon for facilitating this on our behalf.
Jonathan will re-join us for further rehearsals on the Anzac Day weekend. Till then, Oriana will be immersed in learning the choruses of Elijah, Part 2. Onward and upward!
Performances will be at The Events Centre, Caloundra on Saturday, May 18th at 7.00 pm; and at St John's Cathedral, Brisbane on Sunday, May 19th at 1.00 pm.
