Richie Bates is a Cairns-based track cyclist and local councillor

Experienced track cyclist Richie Bates recently subjected himself to realistic-looking moulage make-up, simulating road accident wounds, to help promote recruitment of ‘simulated patients’ for the CQUniversity Nursing program.

The program seeks to have local volunteers on the books to act as ‘patients’ for nursing residential schools later this year.

CQUniversity Nursing lecturer Terri Sullivan says that “students find it extremely valuable and the health industry finds that our students are really work-ready”.

“The closest reality we can do in a setting like this is to have volunteer actors and actresses from the community that we can prepare for these sessions.”

CQUni SimTech Cath Haug says the simulated patients are needed for Nursing student sessions based in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Noosa.

Members of the public who are interested in volunteering to become a simulated patient can find out more from Ms Haug, via 07 4037 4740 or c.haug@cqu.edu.au.
