STEPPING into your local dental surgery can be as fun as pulling teeth ... however for the team at Avenue Dental everything is pearly white.
For the second year running, the Sunshine Coast-owned surgeries have been recognised as among the nation's best places to work.
Taking out the top gong as Australia's best small business to work at the Australian Financial Review's Great Place to Work awards held last night, the business is represented by more than 50 staff who are passionately loyal to the practices.
Avenue Dental partners Dr Stephen Dudgeon and Dr Eli Burger claim the secret to a happy team is in providing a next-level workplace culture.
"Our focus is strongly on celebrating individuality and creating opportunities," Dr Dudgeon said.
"We integrate our new team members across all aspects of our culture and values – and the way we do this is planned and structured.
"Over time, we have honed our approach, resulting in the outstanding workplace we now have today. And that workplace is helping us drive growth and new opportunities as a business – it has boosted our bottom line."
Great workplaces have significantly less staff turnover and at Avenue Dental there are many team members who have worked in the practice for more than a decade.
"Most of our hygienists, chairside assistants and receptionists have been with us for more than five years, and a number of them beyond a decade," Dr Dudgeon said.
"And after being recognised as Australia's best small business workplace in 2017 we are attracting a range of top calibre talent in the dental industry."
One such staff member is Nicole Juric – who has worked with the practice for more than two decades.
"I began working here in the late 1990s when there was only one dentist, an office manager and myself, so I've been part of this journey every step of the way from the early days to the dynamic and fun place it is today," Nicole said.
"I've left to have a family, but I came back because I loved what I did and the people I worked with. There's something to be said about a workplace that feels more like a home and when your team mates become like family."
With three practices operating on the Sunshine Coast (Caloundra, Kawana and Maroochydore) and a fourth set to open in Bli Bli within a few weeks, Avenue Dental has proven that when you sink your teeth into a business based on culture, success is inevitable.
