They're destroying our universities

Published:

The Morrison Government just delivered a devastating blow to universities.

They're planning to more than double student fees for humanities degrees, and hike the cost of degrees like Law and Economics.1 Meanwhile they're also slashing government funding for degrees across the board – including science, technology, engineering and maths.2

This comes after they deliberately excluded university staff from JobKeeper payments – letting our education sector disproportionately suffer as a result of coronavirus.3,4

With Australia deep into its first recession in 30 years and youth unemployment skyrocketing, the impact of this attack against the aspirations and opportunities of young people will be devastating.5 We have to fight back.

The government can't pass their ideological attack without the support of the Senate. With the ALP and Greens opposed to the changes – if we act fast we can show the crossbench just how unpopular these reforms are.

Can you sign our petition demanding no increase to university fees?

GetUp members have a long and proud history of standing up for higher education. In 2014 we worked with our friends at the National Tertiary Education Union and an alliance of organisations across the country to successfully beat back Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey's plans for $100,000 degrees.6

Now, we need to do it again.

These changes mean a whole generation of students will be forced into a lifetime of debt for an education in the critical and creative thinking that will define their future careers. Where once university was provided free – some students will now be paying 93% of the cost of their degree.7

We need to be building up our education system to support the next generation – not throwing university staff and students under the bus during a recession. But people-power fought back Abbott's plans, and people-power can win now too.

Can you sign our petition and stand for quality higher education that's accessible to everyone?

World-class, well-funded, and accessible higher education has always been a cornerstone of a decent society. Whether it's young people looking for a decent job, older workers retraining, or just for the love of learning – university is meant to be for the public good.

But over the past few years, the Coalition's ideological war against higher education, research, and the arts has hollowed out this vital resource.

And at a time when we need all hands on deck to fix the economy, develop vaccines, and develop the renewable technologies of the future – these cuts severely undermine our universities' access to high quality research and researchers.

For the sake of our futures, we can't let the Coalition keep beating up on universities.

✍️ Stand with universities: sign our petition calling for no fee increases for students.

Yours in solidarity,

Ed, Rafi, Charlie, Tessa, and Oliver – for the GetUp team

PS - When the borders closed, universities were one of the first massively hit sectors. Since then, things have only gotten worse. It is critical that the government increases their support for universities, not hit them again with this devastating blow – and you can make this demand by signing our petition here.
