NOOSA alive! has announced a highlight of the 2019 program – Australian songwriting icon TIM FREEDMAN will take to the stage for a special solo performance at The J on Saturday 20 July. Tim will be supported by ALICIA TODD.
Sydney-based Tim Freedman is best known as the front-man and songwriter of one of the most loved Australian rock bands THE WHITLAMS – an Australian Recording Industry Group of the Year with four platinum and two gold albums, whose appeal reaches audiences of all ages and tastes.
The Whitlams won Best Group at the 1998 ARIA Awards, as well as Song of the Year and Best Independent Release for their third album ‘Eternal Nightcap’. This was followed up in the next decade with the multi-platinum ‘Love This City’ and the No. 1 Aria charting album ‘Torch the Moon’.
Tim’s one-off solo performance for NOOSA alive! will see him sharing his well-crafted songs – a wonderful mix of caustic wit and delicate piano. It is no surprise that Tim's solo shows have become as popular as his four-piece band shows. The Whitlams’ success has always been about the emotional clout of his songs, which is laid bare when the rock adornments are removed. Tim’s show will draw songs from across his entire career and of course will include No Aphrodisiac, Buy Now and Pay Later and Blow Up the Pokies to name but a few.
One of Australia’s most talented creatives, Tim is renowned for his instinct for poignant lyrics and melody, and his highly individual musical style. The good humour and banter of his performances is legendary as is his real talent for live performance. His songs can sound as if Randy Newman had joined Crowded House.
Tim’s songs detail diverse local and international issues including East Timor's independence (400 Miles from Darwin), the Sydney Olympics (Love This City) and the spread of poker machines (Blow Up The Pokies).
His last album ‘Australian Idle’ was his solo debut and is an unabashedly joyful 70's piano-pop outing. The first single is a remake of Billy Field's You Weren't in Love With Me, which enjoyed extensive airplay nationally.
Tim has been a judge of the Australian Music Prize since its inception, and is a board member of the Australian Children's Music Foundation.
Tickets are $55pp. To secure your seat and for further information, visit www.noosaalive.com.au
