What is mental health?

Just like physical health, we also have mental health. Mental health is defined as; a state of comfort in which every individual realises their own potential. Mental health is about the way we think, feel and develop relationships.

The ability to cope with the normal stresses of life; the ability to work efficiently and productively. Where the person is able to make a contribution to her or his community.

Individual perception of personal mental health and wellbeing can be determined by a diversity of factors.

We all have our series of roller-coaster rides; the ups and the downs. There are times when we are on top of the world and times when we are overwhelmed and confused. This is normal.

When we go through tough times, little things can make a difference to how we feel and how we cope with life's roller-coaster ride.

Ways to look after your mental health and wellbeing

We are all different and what works for one; may not work for another. There are little things you can do daily which may help.

  • Engage with others. Spending time with family or friends, meeting new people.
  • Be creative.  Activities or hobbies can keep you distracted.
  • Powerful relationships. Get in touch with people who you trust or feel good around.
  • Attention to strengths. Having positive thoughts can help you feel better.
  • Give yourself a break. When you relax, you allow yourself permission to let go of worries for a while.
  • Sleep well. We cannot function properly without sleep.
  • Maintain active lifestyle. Being physically active can improve your mood and reduces stress.
  • Nutrition. Eating well can make a difference to the way you feel, and in-turn may improve your mental health.

It is easy to forget that we are all individuals in a multicultural environment. If you are feeling overwhelmed or know someone going through a tough time reach out. Help is always on hand.
