As we usher in the New Year we gather with family and friends and head out about to events.

Police on the Sunshine Coast will be out and about to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.

Remember to plan ahead – whether a quiet BBQ at home or a busy event.

If you plan on having a few alcoholic beverages have a ‘Plan B’ in place to make sure you get home safely.

Make plans to stay at a friends house, arrange a lift, catch a cab or have a designated driver for the night.

Personal safety is also important – take simple precautions to help ensure you have a safe night out.

If you are out and about walking with friends and stay in public places and well-lit areas, keep your mobile phone with you and let people know your plans for the evening.

Make sure that you look after your friends – if someone is showing signs of having too much to drink make sure they get home safely.

Make sure that you don't leave drinks unattended and only accept drinks from people that you know and trust.  It also helps to alternate alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at a sensible pace.

Remember to stay hydrated in the heat, as the heat and dehydration can have a negative impact on your evening.

For anyone hosting a New Years Eve party make sure that you register your party here.

There are also handy party planning tips, a checklist and information for hosts, guests and parents.
