Confusion and Concern over 'The Dam'
We have been receiving many emails in regard to this issue that took everyone by surprise when it was announced just recently. The Mary Valley area have been good supporters of this site and personally strike me as very pro-active community that has been through hard times.
I am not an expert on water issues, though obviously am very aware of the water shortages in South East Queensland as most people are, and of course fully comprehend the need to ensure a good water supply for the future in such a rapidly growing region. My naive 'joe average' concern is why something like this should be built in such a beautiful area when protecting our natural environment is of such a high priority in this day and age?
You have to feel for a community that lives on 'water tanks' and have done the 'right thing' water-wise, to 'pay' for the future water supply of others? I empathise with their 'ripped off' feeling. I wonder if the powers that be have investigated maybe giving our cousins in BrisVegas a grand each to go towards putting in water tanks in each property would help and that surely would be cheaper then a dam? Maybe a silly idea, but an alternative?
I may not know a lot about water supply, dams, or the like, though I do understand and appreciate 'People Power' and have talked about this before. Nothing gives me more hope for our future then when I see people disagreeing with or questioning a decision made by higher bodies and instead of rabid or violent behaviour, actually investigate and then inform others to their cause. Democracy and Freedom of Speech in action is a joy to behold.
As you can imagine, the people of the Mary Valley are not lying down, rolling over, and playing dead on this issue, as I am sure if this was your Valley in your backyard that was being flooded you would not be either? We have an article onsite in our 'Community News' where we will keep putting up any articles in regard to this issue so that hopefully they can point you in the right direction to find out more about this very complex and emotional proposal, 'Confusion & Concern over The Dam'. If you wish to assist this community, find out more about the issue, have your say (whether you agree or disagree) please contact the organisations (or ourselves) in the above article and be a part of democracy in process...
