'more than meets the eye' Giveaway
Local author Yvette Adams is launching her self published, very personal book, 'more than meets the eye' about her grandfather, a blind wrestler, this month and to celebrate is giving us a copy of her book to giveaway to one of our 'Coast News' regulars. To be in the running for a copy just send in an email to 'the hat' and put 'wrestler' in the subject line.

The Editors Desk!
Spam, spam & more Spam
It is looking more and more likely that our ISP's (Internet Providers) will be soon giving free Spam Protection as part of their services. In theory that is great! Spam has increased so rapidly in recent years that it has got to the ridiculous stage, and seems to have really gone up a notch or two in the past few months. There are already hundreds of Spam Filters out there, most of them Free, and often your ISP will already have one on their servers for your protection, which then raises other issues.

A Spam Filter is still a programme, it can't really read your mail, it can only respond to set directions and as we know, there are always exceptions to the rules. Unfortunately quite often they are advertised as 'stress free' protection, 'set & forget'. As commonsense would normally tell you in regard to a programme, this is never the case. A programme is only as good as the rules applied, and those rules can never anticipate everything.

I have raised this issue this week due to my own immense frustration with spam. With over 65,000 visitors per month to the site, it also means those lovely spammers, just can't help themselves but inundate us with spam, and I think I have tried everything. Unfortunately with every spam filter, some legitimate emails have been accidentally grabbed by the filter and I have spent maybe more time double checking my spam folder. Not to mention people ringing me in frustration because I have not responded to them, or myself getting cranky because someone else's spam filter has chewed up my email so they have not responded back to me :(

In a business environment you can't afford to miss legitimate mail that could be extra business for you. Spam Filters on all ISP's will be a wonderful thing, though I please urge you to educate yourself on what sort of filter is provided and how you can change the settings to suit yourself and double check that everything in your spam box is actually spam. On a personal level, this is not too much of an issue, if you accidentally spammed Aunty Joan's email she will be pretty quick on the phone to let you know about it. Unfortunately the potential client will just think you are not interested in their business.

Software keeps improving at an amazing rate and one day we might have more intuitive spam filters, adaware filters, and child safety devices installed on our computers. In the meantime though, the best protection that you can give yourself, your business, and your family is doing it the old fashioned way, educate yourself as to what is on your computer, learn to use and understand the software yourself. Don't rely on Net Nanny programmes and the likes to protect your kids, monitor what your children do and teach them good habits and responsible internet use, just like you would in any other 'real-life' situation. Take advantage of the knowledge of co-workers, friends & relatives, everyone knows someone who is internet savvy. The internet will become an even bigger part of our life as time goes on, so please, take advantage of Free Classes and friends. Remember:
The only dumb question is the one that is not asked
