NSW Look Away Now...
Some great Giveaways this issue, they are more interesting then my normal rants LOL, so don't miss out. Of course we can't have an issue without a few of my quirky thoughts, bad habit that, thinking... Like all good Queenslanders I am proud of living here and State of Origin is a special time for me as I am old enough to remember how it all started and the pride we had as a state when we could actually compete with NSW on a level playing field.

This Wednesday though I was really disappointed. I had not been out on Origin night for a long time, we tend to party at home, and was appalled to see both Blues & Maroons signage at a club in equal display? I even questioned one of the staff and was told "We don't want to offend the Southerners"... Hello? Umm last I looked this was Queensland, I was disgusted. Obviously to be a feral parochial 365 days a year is terribly tacky & tedious, but to be proud of where you live and your state for 3 lousy nights a year, is that too much to expect? I then got home to watch the game with the family, to have my daughter comment that many of her friends were supporting NSW because 'blue' was a prettier colour? I won't even comment on what my thoughts were with that...

I lived in NSW for a few years, there was never a concern about offending me when I went out down there, being in NSW, well, you keep a low profile on those nights, fair call too. I think maybe we need to be educating our kids here a bit better. I know we have many more southerners living here now and more arriving every week, they are welcome of course, I have many southern friends, but fair crack, let's not forget who we are? Being proud of your state is not being 'red neck', nothing to be ashamed of, and State of Origin is definitely not a time to be 'politically correct' and 'sensitive' of the opposition?

Queenslanders, please, educate your kids in "WHY" Origin started in the first place, it is not just about football, it was about not being given a fair go, not letting our own players represent our own state, (remember the NSW clubs that did not want to release players to us? sods!), and basically being shafted by a bigger, wealthier competition & state. Given the chance finally, we showed we could compete & mate, we were proud! Obviously kids are ignorant of this history :( It does not hurt to be a Proud Queenslander at Origin time and have some old fashioned pride in our state and it's achievements against the odds. You don't have to be into Rugby League to be proud of your State. Cheers Noely
