Good Hype for a change...

As many of you know, Media Hype can sometimes drive me insane. At times I just want to scream when I see variations of the same article day after day inferring that the world is ending. At the moment, all the hype is about Harry Potter and I don't mind at all.

Personally I think JK Rowling should get some sort of Nobel Prize for her contribution to Education. Yes, Education! To this day I can't go to sleep at night without reading some of a book and luckily both my husband and daughter also enjoy the pleasures of Reading. When I was growing up it was a different story, particularly as a teenager, most of my friends thought I was a dag because I loved books. It was almost something to be ashamed of, like you were some sort of brainiac or worse. My daughter is now in grade 8, and I love the fact that times have changed, most of her friends read, (both boys & girls), and many are eagerly ancipating the release of the last installment in the series. I will admit, I am too! Harry Potter is not just for kids, as any other adult who has gotten hooked will tell you.

A lot of this reading popularity in this generation of kids can be attributed to the very first Harry Potter book. There has always been great kids books around, unfortunately they have never been able to get the same sort of publicity and hype going that made kids pay attention the same as they would the release of a new Play Station game. The Harry Potter phenonment changed that. Many of my daughters friends admit it was the first book they ever read by choice, and guess what, they got a taste for the world that can be created by a great story in a book and have moved on to other books, authors, and stories. English Teachers must be loving it!

In this day of so much TV, Computer Games, etc. it is awesome to see kids getting mental stimulation from a good book. Not to mention the ability to escape the pressures that many kids feel in a heathy way, which disappearing into a good story can do for you. Anyone who can entice the average teenager to pick up a book deserves an award. A love of reading will help you with your education and comprehension all your life. Enjoyment & Education, a Win-Win situation...
