Flu, Floods & Fools...

Hasn't it all been happening on the Sunshine Coast in the last few weeks? Every second person seems to have the flu or is crook in some way shape or form. A deluge of biblical proportions, and again this weekend we have more rain (shame it can't be spread evenly over every area in drought), even flooding.

So many areas of the coast got affected, events were cancelled or postponed, sporting finals thrown into disarray, kids sent home from school, and a lot of nervous people. Living in Noosa, I have to say that all my admiration goes to the SES volunteers. They are awesome, most live locally, were obviously concerned about their own homes and families, yet are out there in the middle of the night, in shocking conditions, looking after everyone else, and for no moolah!

There has been so much discussion in the media about role models recently due to the Joey Johns scandal (and others), and whether they should be considered role models. In 'theory', sports people, celebrities etc. should not be role models to kids, parents etc. should be, and many people subscribe to that, BUT, anyone with kids knows that the 'facts' are very different. The little boys in the backyard argue over who is going to be Joey Johns, not Dad or their teacher. Sad, but true. Not until kids are older do they look to their parents and others who are actually worthy of being role models.

Besides Parents, the SES volunteers should beat any ARL or AFL so called 'heroes' hands down. The job they do as we have recently seen is phenomenal and worthy of aspiring to. Having said this, I find it so hard to believe that there can be so many idiots in our own community who go out of their way to hamper the SES efforts. People who tried to get past road blocks? Hello? it is there for a reason & just because you have a big 4WD you are not invincible. People who thought, sweet, we have a drama happening, let's go check it out? Again... while the SES & others are either getting you out of trouble, or wasting time turning back traffic, they could actually be helping people who need their assistance, or even getting a bit of a break themselves from all the hours of work they have been putting in under terrible conditions.

Please! These Volunteers deserve the utmost courtesy & respect and should be assisted, not hampered. We have rain again now, we have Summer Cyclone Season coming up, be prepared, be careful, educate yourself & your kids as to what to do in these situations so you are not needing the SES assistance. Don't be a moron making a terrible situation worse by ignoring solid advice solely aimed at your safety.

Kids? Flick the Sports people, have a chat to an SES Volunteer, you will be surprised at the 'cool' training they go through & things they learn that lets them do the job they do! SES :)
