We are Not the US!

I don't know about you, but I am sick of this Election already, and it has not even been called yet LOL! I almost want to scream every time the news starts with "Recent polling shows..." What drives me more insane is that nearly every poll questions the popularity of John Howard and Kevin Rudd. Last time I looked we were not the US, we did not vote for a choice of Leader? My daughter asked me who I was going to vote for the other day, so I of course had to bore her silly explaining our 'representative system', the party who has the most seats in Parliament chooses a Prime Minister etc. Of course she then just repeated, "yeah yeah, but who are you going to vote for Howard or Rudd" UGH!

This terribly boring conversation then led to... Ok well who are the representatives in our area? I was like umm not really sure yet, have to wait until an election is called. This actually concerned me. We see so much guff on Howard & Rudd, and not a lot on who is actually putting their hand up to represent our interests in our communities, so I thought I better try to do some research. Easier said then done...

First of all, I had to work out where our boundaries are now for the Federal Election. Man, talk about confusing, Noosa is now in Wide Bay, some areas like poor Alexandra Headland are basically split between Electorates, Alex is both Fairfax & Fisher, (If you are unsure if your electorate has changed, I strongly suggest you check the AEC website to find out what electorate you are actually in),

Alrighty, so I found out what electorate I was in, but still had to troll to find out who was standing in my electorate, some parties had candidates, some said they would advise at a later date (I think that means they are not sure if they have a candidate yet), and some said they would not have a candidate in my area. To find out about Independents, in most cases, we will have to wait until it is on the AEC site, which will not be until after the Election is called. So, where does that leave us? Well nowhere really & still hearing about Rudd & Howard only, sprouting potential policy, on a 'pretend' campaign trail. No wonder so many young people think that we have a 2 choice leadership system like they do in the United States. Anyone else think this situation is starting to get a tad ludicrous?

Hopefully soon, we will find out who all the candidates are in our own electorates, you never know, they might even take the time to talk about stuff that actually matters to our areas? I know, naive, but hey, I can still live in hope that our 'Elected Representatives' will actually represent 'us', Joe & Jane Taxpayer, who is paying their wages to give us a say in the 'Big House'. By the way, any potential Candidates for Wide Bay, Fairfax or Fisher, you are most welcome to send in any press releases, profiles or biographies for us to put up in the Community News, so we can learn more about you?

In the meantime, footy finals are on, so hopefully they will take up a bit more airspace instead the 'phantom election'. At the moment, who has potential injury seems a lot more interesting then the sniping from the major parties... Best of luck to your favourite (team, not pollie) this weekend! :)
